Team-Building – Many organisations embark upon team-building programmes. Teams need an informal gathering now and then to get to know their teammates better and unwind. Team building activities raise team awareness and build personal links between team members. 

Team-Building events and activities are usually the responsibility of the HR department. Some examples of team building activities could be fitness sessions, outdoor activities and games.  

Strategic Team Coaching – is aimed explicitly at aligning teams, resolving conflict and increasing performance, usually aimed at senior teams. Facilitated by an experienced Coach, Strategic Team Coaching sessions typically last a few days or even months. 

Strategic Team coaching is a more sophisticated approach to boost team dynamics, performance, and relationships. Strategic Team coaching helps build an environment that promotes teamwork, honesty, and the knowledge to navigate through any conflict. Strategic Team coaching is goal-oriented and aligned with the organisation’s strategic objectives. 

In a nutshell, team building does not resolve conflict and is generally not focused upon organisational strategy. Strategic Team coaching is a broader term that covers team building. Strategic Team coaching goes beyond playful team building activities to enhance teamwork, build trust among team members, align the team, resolve conflicts, increase team awareness that goes beyond each individual, and develop empathy and shared commitment.
